Your Children / On Children
Extract
Kahlil Gibran

Your children are not your children, they are the sons and daughters of lifes longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you.
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts for they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls, for their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward, nor taries with yesterday.

Just found this poem and thought it was gorgeous. Definately not advice my mother needs but something she always holds dear and follows, though I don't know if she has ever seen this. It's here to remind me that as and when and if, this is something I too ought to be mindful of!

A rather belated HAPPY NEW YEAR to all of you firstly.
Secondly, resolutions are something I never keep so I won't be making any.
Thirdly, I have now returned from my countrywide zip about (though I'm sorry for missing pubbage tonight, but [livejournal.com profile] devalmont and I really needed some together time).

This means a further two things; [livejournal.com profile] deborah_c, I am at your disposal this week. Let me know when is good (if you haven't already, which I'm about to check). [livejournal.com profile] gandalf_t_black - tomorrow evening would be favourable. Also, I could really do with catching up with the rest of you too which I'm hoping will happen soon.

In brief, I had two lovely family Christmases and a great catch-up with friends in my home town (some of whom I hadn't seen for literally years) at New Years. I'll try to do a proper write-up soon but I'm off now to return to [livejournal.com profile] devalmont - foodage then dvdness I think.

Oh! And [livejournal.com profile] min_ki - when you read this, if you're in North Carolina make sure you post? I'd love to know how you're getting on (and thanks for talking with me earlier, it really helped).

Today has been pretty much perfect. Not the most exciting of days I grant you, but definately perfect. I cleaned the house, got food, cooked a nice meal, got to spend lots of quality time with my partner, had a nap, woke up and had pudding, watched films and went to bed really late. (Though I can't quite settle yet so of course, have come to lj and neopet!)

Better yet, I get [livejournal.com profile] devalmont all day tomorrow too. I've got the day off and we hadn't realised until this evening that we were both off (I didn't know he was, he didn't know I was). So we're off to see Pans Labyrinth in the evening. Here's hoping I don't find it too traumatic. Everyone keeps telling me I should go and see it, but I'm not sure if it's showing still - anyone know?

OH! And just to confirm, for those of you who've been reliably informed I'll DEFINATELY be in the pub on Tuesday so I hope to see as many of you there as possible. Gotta see you all, it's been far too long.

If anyone has 2 tickets for Ricky Gervais at the Manchester Apollo going spare, I know someone who'd really like them ([livejournal.com profile] min_ki wanted to get some for her man but they are all sold out now so I turn to you, my lj buddies, in case you've bought surplus).

Clearly she *could* pay stupid amounts for them on ebay but her finances won't stretch to that. She's not actually fussed about venue as long as it isn't too far from Leicester (hence her initial Manchester ideal but anywhere within reason would be good!).

As requested by [livejournal.com profile] scarybex, I'm going to list on here what I've had each day so far in my advent bag. My wonderful, magical and barmy Mum does one each year for me (in addition to a Christmas stocking). Each day, I have to hunt through the bag and open the present with that days date on it.

As my sister gets largely the same things (but not necessarily in the same date order) each year, I've put it behind a cut for her sake )

The other kind of things I'm likely to get )

A brief history! )

[livejournal.com profile] boglin has posted this on her journal and I think it's an excellent idea so I'm posting it here.

In brief; between 1 November and 31 January, Amnesty International is asking supporters to send cards with messages of hope and solidarity to people in danger or unjustly imprisoned. [livejournal.com profile] boglin is co-ordinating but if you can send just one extra card this year (regardless of why you send them, or even if you ordinarily don't!), please read the post and comment.

Also, spreading this on would be a good thing too so feel free to re-post this.

Thanks.

I Remember. For those who've gone needlessly and bravely, over many many years, from many different countries, for many reasons. It would be strange and wonderful world if there was no further need, no further waste. But do we ever learn?

It was quite surreal on Saturday, standing perfectly still in a shop with confused small children and bemused foreigners moving around. However, I was very impressed at the number of people who stopped, paused with heads bowed respectfully before continuing with their day of shopping.

Remember

On a less important (but highly newsworthy for personal reasons) note, Eddies, or rather Edwards No.8 and The Gallows (which was also badly damaged as I understand it). Many of my Birmingham (UK) and surrounding area readers will already be aware that it was victim to a large fire on Saturday night and is not likely to return. There have been many posts of pictures but those of you who haven't seen it, the link is here, pictures here.

Suffice to say, that place meant a lot to me in it's own way. It was walking through the upstairs doors that caused me to say (and decide) to move to Birmingham in the first place and if it weren't for there, I think life would have been very different for me. In a way, it is how I met [livejournal.com profile] devalmont (via the ever wonderful [livejournal.com profile] toxicpixie, [livejournal.com profile] karohemd and [livejournal.com profile] poetman). It's where I met [livejournal.com profile] sapphrine. It's where I gothed out with so many of you. I'm sad to see it go and as is always the case, didn't appreciate it enough whilst it was there.

Sorry peeps, for those of you who've been trying to reach me by phone for the past week...

my phone is temporarily dead

...because I thought it was lost, so cancelled the sim card and blocked the phone, and have been waiting for the new sim card to arrive. I have now unblocked the phone but need to register the sim today (as well as charging it up I assume!). SO, if you've tried to call or text, humblest apologies. Those of you who've got my landline number, use that for the time being but normal service will (hopefully) be resumed by the end of the weekend at the latest.

A bit of a rant and my views on 'the system' )

So in light of all the above, whilst it's better than nothing, the system is far from perfect. And I hate that. And it's been a good while since I was so angry and frustrated about the entire situation and a recent lj entry has reminded me of just how much I despair of it all.

As I'm having a Sarah moment; "It's not fair". Because it isn't. Any of it. And I feel powerless and unable to do anything to fix it.

As the old woman walked along the beach at dawn, she noticed a young woman ahead of her picking up starfish and flinging them back into the sea. Finally, catching up to the youth, the woman asked her why she was doing this. The answer was that the stranded fish would die if left in the morning sun. "But the beach goes on for endless miles and there are millions of starfish," countered the other. "How can your effort make any difference?" The young woman looked at the starfish in her hand and then threw it safely into the waves. "It makes a difference to this one," she said.

A few weeks back, [livejournal.com profile] devalmont and myself posted saying we might have a room in our house going spare soon.

Well, that soon has arrived. Our housemate is leaving early November so we need someone to take his place.

The house is just after the railway bridge on Mill Rd, about 15 minutes walk from town and 10 minutes walk from the station. Ideal for the London commute.

We're looking for an individual (it's a double room but the house really couldn't support two couples) who is Goth-friendly, ideally who knows us, and who is sensible but knows how to enjoy themselves. We're both non-smokers but do not prejudice anyone who wishes to smoke outside. We have one occasional visiting cat (who isn't ours!), but other than that no pets, unless you count guitarists.

The rent is £290 a month + bills, and although the room is available from early November there's no huge rush to fill it, if you need to give notice on your current place.

P+P will be added at the end and I will notify you of how much it is going to cost - so the more you buy, the more you save!

I normally give to charity shops but am trying this instead to see how it goes. FYI, I'm not doing this via Ebay because neither I or [livejournal.com profile] devalmont have a credit card to enable me to set up a sellers account!

Oooh, all happy. We were watching 'I'm Alan Partridge' series two briefly on Sunday. There is, on the interactive menu, a brilliant clip (though I'm not a huge Alan Partridge fan tbh).

Anyway, I felt inspired to dig out my Gary Numan - Exposure CD which is a best of from '77 to '02 and currently am dancing a silly dance around the living room to the track featured on said DVD menu...

if you have it, go put on 'Music for Chameleons' and smile a cheesey early 80s smile. If you DON'T have it, try it on for size.

[livejournal.com profile] devalmont is off to be a rock-star-dj tonight at The Calling (despite his bestest attempts to get me to accompany him, I won't be there - shattered as usual and can't shake of my weekend meeps) so best of all, go and nudge him to play it. I'll forewarn him! :D

As [livejournal.com profile] devalmont has mentioned on his lj, we might be on the lookout for a new housemate in the next month or so. We're not certain of when (or indeed if it's for definate) [livejournal.com profile] temlekin will be going but it's been mentioned so we're testing the water.

Comments, as always, screened and I'll be happy to leave them that way if you're looking on the sly. Feel free to ask any questions.

£300 per month not including bills
unfurnished large room (which will easily fit a double bed and the basics)
shared living room and kitchen
shared bathroom
located a stones throw from the Earl of Beaconsfield (address on application!) just off Mill Road
current residents are two Gothy happy types who like loud music
council tax is paid on a rotating basis atm, but would work out at £40 ish per month
we have broadband and a wireless connection
phone rental is split equally three ways - calls paid for on an individual basis
gas and electric also split equally three ways

So, last night (as some of you know) I went (with a large group of equally silly individuals) to the flicks to see Snakes On A Plane. 'Was it any good?' 'Is it worth the hype?' 'Should I just wait for the video?' I hear you ask.

If you want a 'switch off the brain and have a laugh' film, with snakes, on a plane, and Samuel L Jackson being cool, and a very predictable 'next scene' the entire way through, go see it. It does exactly what it says on the tin and I loved it. Very silly, very far fetched, utterly brilliant.

Not for anyone who doesn't like ridiculous films, not for anyone who wants a high brow and serious flick and definately not for those who like things to make sense and have at least some basis on reality. But anyone who goes to see it in that kind of mindset obviously hasn't looked at the title!

I had cause to remember this poem today - and think I might re-theme my lj accordingly rather than thee trusty ole Depeche Mode song theme. Anyway, have a read and see what you think:

The Spider and The Fly
Based on the cautionary tale by Mary Howitt

"Will you walk into my parlour?"
said the Spider to the Fly,
"'Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy;
The way into my parlour is up a winding stair,
And I have many curious things to show you when you are there."

"Oh no, no," said the little Fly, "to ask me is in vain,
For who goes up your winding stair can ne'er come down again."

..... )

And now, dear little children, who may this story read,
To idle, silly, flattering words I pray you ne'er give heed;
Unto an evil counsellor, close heart and ear and eye,
And take a lesson from this tale, of the Spider and the Fly.

We are all of us both at times - I do worry about some of you, be careful you don't pay attention to the wrong people and the wrong things.

I had a really really good time at the party last night so first and foremost, thank you to our most excellent host, [livejournal.com profile] raggedy_man. There were lots of other ljers and nonljers there, some of who I knew and some of who I didn't, all of whom were lovely.

There was lots of alcohol, lots of food, lots of stuff to drink which wasn't alcohol, a little bit of rain (which didn't dampen the enthusiasm).

BIG long list alert...

There were impressive fireworks, terror of falling sticks, lots of girly gossip and giggling (well, [livejournal.com profile] akonken WAS there and that is what we do best!), far too much [livejournal.com profile] _ebb_ being selfish and going on about a difficult situation in the kitchen for far too long (sorry [livejournal.com profile] akonken and [livejournal.com profile] nekofairy666 and thanks for listening to it all), not enough Murphy stroking (those of you not in the know, he's the resident cat and he's fabulous), lots of silly sing-along songs about Tractor Factories, loving Monsters etc, lots of not quite as silly singing, a little lesson on the Boran ([livejournal.com profile] belak_krin patiently explained it all to me), corset schtuff with [livejournal.com profile] autumn_storm, yummy Sangria made by [livejournal.com profile] twentypence, [livejournal.com profile] karohemd looking very buff (must be all the naked dancing with the metal cone :P), [livejournal.com profile] razornet and [livejournal.com profile] devalmont having a good time with firearms, intelligent conversations, feet being amusingly put into mouths (but it's all ok), mastery of a barbeque under difficult circumstances (ie being surrounded by demanding drunk people, managing in the rain and the dark - [livejournal.com profile] robinbloke deserves special mention at this point!), and lots of other things and people that I can't remember!

In short, a great night with good people. And that's a pretty special thing, however often I have the privlege to enjoy it. Thanks all.

*awaits the hangover from hell*

I seem to have gotten rather drunk rather quickly last night. As a result, I treated my wonderful [livejournal.com profile] devalmont in a not too nice fashion because I was confused. Luckily he understood my inebriated state, calmly ignored me and got us safely home and then whisked me from the floor where I passed out to a nice comfy bed, whilst starting on a 'find [livejournal.com profile] akonken' mission. He's ever so good. We like him. He's currently on the verge of being a Dave's Syndrome victim though so anyone with any cooling ideas and thoughts, please send them his way.

Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] libellum, [livejournal.com profile] strongtrousers and [livejournal.com profile] elise, our hostesses and hosts for the evening. I'm sorry we didn't stay longer - I think I'll drink less next time! And apologies to anyone who I rambled drunkedly at. I hope I wasn't too annoying. Unfortunately I can't remember most of it. :-(

Right, off to get a shower, some food and then welcome [livejournal.com profile] akonken over.

I opted for 'The Raven' being the sad ole goffik I am. :D

Anyway, just posting here to bring your attention to this. You see, the winamp skin was a promo for Lou Reeds 'The Raven' and aforementioned link will take you there. I thought some of you might like to take a gander but be warned, lots of visuals and sound so probably not a good plan for those of you with dial-up.

In other news, well, there isn't! I've been incredibly lazy this weekend through apathy, lack of energy and generally being a bit hell-cat like. Do I HAVE to go to work tomorrow? Ok, ok. Mind you, it has been a 'little' better this last week - lets hope it lasts.

Whilst looking for a Dita Von Teese mood theme, I found this. It's a black cat mood theme! Ok, ok, it wasn't that interesting. Gee, it's Monday morning guys, I'm kinda short on inspiration right now and my day has already nose dived.

Is it wrong to spend all Sunday in pjs, hunting for Dita icons and then uploading them to your lj? Thought not...

Ladies and Gents

I feel like a bit of a change. I feel like a bit of inspiration. I feel the need for Dita. So if you know of any Dita Von Teese icons or icon communities, or mood themes, could you please point me in their direction?

Thank you!

Morning all - bit of an odd one today. Is there, to anybodys knowledge, any truth in this alert about lead in lipstick or is it a hoax? )

I'm never sure about such things and whilst I have the time to post this, I've no idea where to look to find out whether or not it's a hoax. Put behind a cut for those of you who detest such things!

Confirmed as a hoax so watch out for it and DON'T pay it any heed if it comes your way!

Not that I really need any more, but I'm rather happy to see that my userpics limit has been increased to 38 simply by me sitting here having a paid account! Yey!

*feels a bit of a userpic frenzy coming on....*

(check out the news page if this isn't something you already knew about)
