I really do love last.fm. Based on my musical profile it's currently playing me recommendations. Currently I'm listening to Bizet's 'Carmen' - Habanera. And it got me thinking. I usually say I hate opera. But that just isn't true - I love choral pieces and I love lots of 'bits' of opera but knowing very little about it, I'm not sure what to plump for. Another piece I love is Offenbach's 'Les contes d'Hoffmann' - Belle nuit (Barcarolle).

So, for those of you who are far more educated on such things.... help! Recommend something to me, tell me what your favourite piece is and why, and hopefully I'll learn what to disregard and what to go with!

(NB - All answers screened as per usual!)

People. About 3 weeks ago, I realised with horror that my Samsung phone wasn't charging. I tried a different charger (which was proved to work on another phone) but no cigar. Being me and useless with technogubbins, I'd stored all of my phone numbers on the phone rather than the sim (and no, I don't ever learn!).

As such, although my number is still the same, I have NO IDEA who most of my old texts are from.

This is my (by now regular) plead for anyone who has my number to text me with their name so I can address the issue. Alternatively, comment.

Link to my details here for those of you who don't have me stored anywhere but would like to. If you can't see it, it's because I don't know you!

Dear All

It would seem that an evil chinese company decided to make use of my hotmail account yesterday. If you got a message from me which was a little odd and very NOT me, it's because it was them;

What you might have had via email )

Needless to say, I'm not impressed. I've changed my password, am changing my security questions etc and will soon be opening a different account. In the meantime, message me on lj or through lj's email forwarding. I will be ensuring it's always kept up to date. The address is my user name at livejournal dot com.

For the techies, it was sent through the autoresponse / vacation response system. The message is sitting in my 'sent' emails!! Quite how they got in, I don't know but I was probably careless with a password somewhere. It seems that they've not done much else but at least I can give everyone else a heads up. If you can think of anything else I can do, let me know.

Sorry everyone!!

My Gran is a little whirlwind of goodness. She excudes it. It's quite sickening how charitable, kind, patient and generous she is. She's always doing something for her latest cause, along with running day centres and lunch clubs, coming up with fund raising ideas which take off globally and so on.

Her latest call to arms is The Big Knit.

If you like knitting, or like 'innocent' drinks, please visit the innocent website here and get those needles clicking! Or go into Sainsburys and buy lots of be-hatted smoothies.

As alas, I can't knit and am not part of any fundraising groups or charities, my input is limited to posting here and encouraging you all to pass it on. Oh, and buying the delicious innocent 'yoghurt, vanilla bean and honey' thickies. Shame really...

I have, of late, rediscovered the joy and randomness of last.fm.

Having gone through and selected lots of songs and bands I approve of, it can now play me recommendations based on the music I like. And it just tuned me into this, which I found amusing, hence I'm posting it here;

ThouShaltNot - If I Only Were A Goth
(sing to the tune of 'If I Only Had A Heart')

I'd be thinner, I'd be taller
Go clubbing in my collar
With skin pale as a moth
Dressed in black, I'd go creepin'
While the normal folk are sleepin'
If I only were a Goth

With my hair up, I'd look fancy
Like Siouxsie and the Banshees
With silk or velvet cloth
Dressed in boots, never sandals
And the room would be lit with candles
If I only were a Goth

Yes I'd wanna die... )

Class! What's even more amusing is that last.fm chose to play me Chopin's Funeral March just before it.... someone somewhere has a brill sense of humour.

According to The Big Read, the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books on their list. So let's see how many I've read; )

27/100. There are a few more I've started and given up on as I've not enjoyed them but I reckon they don't count. I kind of skipped a lot of 'classics' and have started to put together a 'must read' list so this will, I think, help me!

So it occured to me that it's been forever since I checked lj to see how you all are. The problem is, when you do finally check in after a while it takes far too long to play catch up so a cheat is required.

If anything of note has happened to you and yours over the past... erm... 3 months (!) please comment / leave a link to where it's at so we can all go and take a peak.

Other than that, much love to you all - being offline during the week is hellish, having 2 weeks off work is wonderful, spending some of that with family and friends has (so far) been wonderful and you all ROCK.

A very brief jaunt online to wish everyone a joyous Summer Solstice (which is, this year, Friday 20th June).

Incidentally, the BBC has a handy little calendar which I'm putting the link to here for future reference as a couple of the dates have a tendancy to move each year.

Hope you're all well - I know I'm being naughty and not seeing much of anyone but Rich is working this weekend so if any of my Cambridge crew are free, let me know and we can meet up for coffee and giggles.

Dresden Dolls - Sing

There is this thing that's like touching except you don't touch
Back in the day it just went without saying at all
All the world's history gradually dying of shock
There is thing that's like talking except you don't talk
You sing
You sing

Sing for the bartender sing for the janitor sing
Sing for the cameras sing for the animals sing
Sing for the children shooting the children sing
Sing for the teachers who told you that you couldn't sing
Just sing

There is thing keeping everyone's lungs and lips locked
It is called fear and it's seeing a great renaissance... )

Just seemed very appropriate tonight.

ONE MAN, ONE DRUM

Please, take a moment to visit the site, read the diary, look at the videos - Dan is dralking (drumming whilst he walks) from John O'Groats to Lands End to raise £12,000 for ProstAid. If you can spare the cash, please sponsor him and / or pass the link on to others you know might be interested. Business sponsorships welcome of course but everything helps.

It's not often I post links to real worthwhile causes for two reasons. 1) I figure you are all perfectly capable of finding things yourself and 2) who wants anything rammed down their neck?

However, I urge you all to go and visit One Man, One Drum (and for those of you who like me can't access myspace at work, try this article on it instead).

Dan Fowler (who is a total sweetie, single and a bit of a dish, a very talented drummer and a very generous, dedicated one at that) is drumming, 1000 miles from John O'Groats to Lands End. He's doing this to raise money for a very good cause, ProstAid - if you can offer him sponsorship (or your company can) or you can get him some exposure, or even offer him crash space if he's coming through your neck of the woods, please please please get in touch. Even if all you do is pass the link on or do a write-up in the local student rag, it would be very helpful of you!

My Mum is on the case when he hits the Carlisle area but of course, there's lots further to go than that! Any suggestions and help you could give him would be very gratefully received.

[EDIT] This will, admittedly, all seem rather stalkery and I only hope if Pete see's this, he'll take it in his stride rather than thinking my sis is demented. But that's why it's important he gets directed to the post so he can decide and then get in touch with her if he wants to. She's done a google (always a good starting point) but of course, it was rather ambiguous and the chances of him having a site which we can find with bad google-fu is remote. However, by using our social network instead there is bound to be a connection - 6 degrees of seperation and all that.

Given how *wonderful* my day has been (<-- note the slight hint of sarcasm there), [livejournal.com profile] devalmont and I have opted to celebrate my birthday a day early. Esspecially as I'm likely to have to come in early and leave late tomorrow (brain = dead right now - or at least, acting like it - hence I'm not doing a late one today).

Now, this means I'm unlikely to make it along to the Bun Shop tomorrow evening so those of you who read this and go, could you pass it on to the others for me? I'm spending time with the ever lovely [livejournal.com profile] akonken on thursday so in the unlikely event that I'm going to be festooned with cards tomorrow, I'm sure she'd grab them for me. That, or I'll be there a week on Tuesday.

Birthdays are odd things. I want to know I'm loved and thought about but I don't relish the idea of being older. I certainly don't FEEL any older (just more tired and weight goes on easier these days). In fact, I still feel mentally about 16 / 17. Anyway, I'm rambling on so I'm off. Have a lovely evening peeps and I'll see you around soon. I'm escaping to Aston Cantlow this weekend for a bit of relaxation with the 'rents which I'm sure will help cheer my mood. Remember a while back I posted a link to the best umbrella in the world (and yes, the customer review is by me!)? Well, it's been usurped!. Parasols GALLORE (see this 50s inspired baby, this lace effect umbrella style one, this purlple diamonte trim one and this wonderfully extravagent one, equally gorgeous in the purple for instance) and they do the black umbrella I love (so much that I have 3 of them)...

... in PINSTRIPE.

But the one I'd really really really adore if money were no object?

Not really much competition really.
AND you can get a 'bit' which can have real flowers integrated into it courtesy of your local florist... so want a black one with dark red roses for a photo shoot now (utilising an acrylic with strap and a claret handle because what wouldn't go with one or t'other of those).

Dear All

I'm so sorry I've not been online and particularly anywhere near lj recently. Apologies that I've not let you know I needed a break before I took one! Whilst I won't go into the various reasons, I've had a lot going on which has required my energy. If you're privvy to some of my filtered posts you've probably got a good idea what has been the over-riding issue.

For those of you who've expressed concern, things with me are largely fine - life can be a bit of a rollercoaster sometimes and it seems I've had a slightly crazy moment. In short, things at home are fine, job is ok, family are strong and all will be well with time and patience and a bit of assertiveness. Though I do intend to start paying attention and visiting lj more often again, I'm not likely to have much time to properly read your entries and comment for a while.

So, if I've missed anything can you please comment and let me know? And if you've any party invites and the like, a text would be appreciated!

Thanks. :)

I'm yet again a happy [livejournal.com profile] _ebb_. Yesterday, utilising Argos vouchers earned by the hubby (with his permission of course!), I bought 4 hanging rails with the intention of finally getting our 'walk in wardrobe' sorted out.

Today, we've spent several hours re-organising the little back room and it is now [livejournal.com profile] _ebb_'s wardrobe (with a smattering of [livejournal.com profile] devalmonts things but he's going to work on his tomorrow and during the next few days).

Now, this has meant sorting through clothes and re-discovering all kinds of lovely things I'd forgotten I had. It also means that I've realised yet again I'm short of one thing - coat hangers. Particularly skirt hangers.

If you have any spare skirt hangers, can I have them please?

I of course would rather you were in Cambridge and that I could pick them up from you / you wanted to come over for an evening of wine and dvds and bring them with you. Applies to male friends too because I know some of you might have spares too!!

I've seen this on [livejournal.com profile] diasporal_waves's lj and a few others in various different formats. Apologies if you've seen this already.

Paraphrased from other journals: Petition against Pay As You Go road tax )

Having personally visited the site, it DOES have to be said that this is NOT a government endorsed petition, it is merely hosted on the Downing Street website and signing it is the same as signing a paper petition which is then delivered to Downing Street. Anyone is able to create a petition there (and if you look through the rejected petitions, you'll see some rather amusing ones regarding mice and unicycles).

The government are under no obligation to look at or act upon it but it is, at least, phsyically there in front of them.

I would also add that by writing down your email address, house number and postcode, the writer of the petition is able to contact you at your own address so be aware of this. Only sign if you are comfortable releasing your personal details to some-one you don't know.

I, personally, will not be signing it as I don't feel comfortable passing on my personal details. However, I have privacy issues. Also, I'm not sure from looking at it why you then have to click on a link sent to you via email. It seems a little dubious to me.

Additionally, this information has being going through the rounds on email and should you wish to take a look here, [livejournal.com profile] mrmmarc makes some very interesting comments regarding the email and or subsequent lj entries taken from it.

The choice is yours but be aware!

This post will NOT involve use of the S* word because everyone else is mentioning it on their ljs. What I WILL mention is earrings.

Not an unusal thing to write about, surely? Well you see, I have a high lose rate of practically everything you can mis-place or forget or leave somewhere. It went through a phase of umbrellas last year (the reason we now have 5 in total these days). This year, much to my despair, it's earrings. However, it's earrings when I'm wearing them and always my right one.

Now, I have lots of pretty jewellery. Partly because I'm a magpie and partly because I've lots of people who know me well and help add to my collection. But all the favourites are rapidly becoming odd ones rather than pairs.

Anyway, I was sat shivering on the bus (after a 30 minute wait in S, utilising one of the many brollies) and went to adjust my hair. What was missing? Yet another earring. I sighed a miserable sigh and shrugged and decided from now on no more hook throughs, it's butterflies all the way! I settled into the journey and resigned myself to it taking forever. I got off the bus and carefully picked my way through the slush, switched off my MP3 player and put up my brollie again. There was a rather odd noise and it wasn't coming from any of my usual sources (there's a tendancy to hear me before you see me due to jingly bracelets and other things). Finally figuring out where the noise was coming from, I looked up into the workings of my brollie and THERE IT WAS. Dangling, as if it had always been there. The missing earring.

I still can't figure out how it go there. But at least I'm back up to two today. And whilst this isn't a par on [livejournal.com profile] rainbowskye's usual chaotic and wonderful mix, it did make me 'Huh!'.

Hope you all get where you're going safely today.

*snow in case you're reading this some months later. Seriously, EVERYONE on my flist (well ok, most of them) is mentioning it today.

2. Put it on shuffle.
3. Press play.
4. For every question, type the song that's playing.
5. When you go to a new question, press the next button.
6. Don't lie and try to pretend you're cool...because you're not.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] min_ki - sorry, as you'll realise by now I had net issues which prevented me from seeing your emails and getting in touch regarding the landline number. Will email you with it as soon as I'm finished updating here.

To everyone who asked in person or via lj, the film was called 'The Appointment'. When I know what is happening with it, I'll let you know. It was set roughly around 1900 in Russia and for those who wanted to know, I played a Russian prostitue. I giggled and was generally a little flirty and cheeky whilst wearing a corset, bloomers, granny boots and an up-down skirt. I may be asked to do more for the same bunch of people in future but if not, it was one of those random things you occasionally get the chance to do and I thought why the heck not. An esteemed actress I'm certainly not, but it was so much fun! Nerves disappeared due to some incredibly patient and brilliant people so if they're reading this, thanks for a wonderful time.

Worringly enough when I told Mum about my part, she laughed and said 'You know Em, I can just see you doing that....'. Do I look like a turn of the century lady of ill repute? Answers on a postcard to the usual address. :)

Right, off for a coffee and then nose to the grindstone. Happy Monday everyone, I'll keep you updated regarding our net access.

Had a really fab (if chilly at times) day today taking part in a short film. Am achey and tired right now, sorry for brief and not entirely coherent post. Late night, early start = ugh. But most definately worth it.

Going to do a quick scan through of my list then it's a little foodage and bed. However, happy Monday y'all.

Me x
